3 Affirmations to Have a Breakthrough Year

Replacing negative thoughts with positive yet authentic affirmations has been shown to help create a new belief system that supports transformational change. The truth is most of our thoughts tend to be negative which creates stress and has been shown to have damaging physical and mental effects on women. And your self-talk is like a negative affirmation on repeat! Without an affirmation or positive guiding thought, the doors to shifting habits can seem closed or stuck.

What you choose to think IS a choice - every minute of every day. And when you choose positive, affirming thoughts you pave the way to embrace change and create action in your life. In fact, there is research that supports positive affirmations help activate parts of the brain that are associated with mental processing and reward along with building a sense of self-competence.

Here are 3 powerful affirmations for women wanting to embrace wellness in the new year:

  1. I let go of the past and welcome the future. It’s important to make peace with your previous choices or habits and forgive yourself for any negative beliefs or actions. You are exactly where you need to be right now and feeling stuck is very human. This is not your forever, it’s only your right now. Being open to a new future vision and trying something (anything!) new can inspire us that change is possible and we are truly capable of using the wisdom we have gained and mistakes we have made to open new doors!

  2. I am making my health a priority this year. This is a BIG one. Putting your health first or at least among your top priorities is not selfish… it’s necessary! Surveys suggest women put their health behind that of their partners, children, parents and even their pets. Taking care of your own health has almost become a radical feminist act and that’s often because our culture and our healthcare system ENABLE women to put their health symptoms aside. “It’s just stress” or “You’re just getting older” are two of the most frustrating, disempowering DISaffirmations women commonly hear. Instead, trust your body’s ability to heal by putting your energy and attention toward the nourishment and self-care it deserves.

  3. This is a time of transformation. I reclaim my natural state of power and joy. Transitioning into a new phase like menopause or going through the process of gut healing can be unsettling - and sometimes women can even feel hatred or shame around their health symptoms. But all the ups and downs are just part of the journey. Forming a vision of your future energized, happy self can help you recreate your current experience as one of discovery, curiosity and kindness.

Whatever you choose to focus on or affirm this year… remember you can keep coming back to it even when you inevitably re-encounter negative thinking. Keep your affirmation(s) on your phone or on sticky notes around your home to remind yourself of your own guidance. Remember you can choose to change your thoughts in any and every moment.
