3 Reasons Beets are a Superwoman Food

Beets in their juiciness and rubiness can be a big friend to women’s health. They may not be the a food you loved as a girl, but lemme tell you… from heart health to libido to glowing skin, you may have a change of heart as a woman.

When prepared properly, beets are sweet, earthy and versatile. While they can be used raw such as sliced thinly in a salad, roasting or steaming brings out their rich, complex flavors. Beet greens are also not only edible but actually have even more nutrients than beets themselves. Greens can be sautéed with a bit of garlic and olive oil or the way I like them best is dropped into a smoothie with carrot, ginger and a bit of green apple.

To roast beets, simply cut off their tops and give them a good scrub since they are a root vegetable. Massage them with a bit of olive oil and bake on a parchment lined baking sheet for 40 minutes at 400 degrees. When they are cool, simply peel off the skin after slicing the ends. Messy… yes. Worth it… definitely!

So why go the extra step to have beets on hand?

  1. Beets can boost progesterone. Progesterone drops during perimenopause which can disrupt sleep, mood and cause all kinds of PMS symptoms. Beets are rich in Vitamin C which is essential to progesterone production. Ample progesterone always inhibits estrogen dominance which can prevent the acne, weight gain, bloating, breast tenderness and insomnia which can cause havoc in hormone transition.

  2. Beets can improve heart health. High in potassium, beets can help lower blood pressure. Beets are also high in nitric oxide which can lower the inflammation that can contribute to cardiovascular disease. In fact, studies suggest eating beets or drinking beetroot juice even once a day provides a sustained decrease in blood pressure. This heart healthy blood flow can also improve libido!

  3. Beets are beauty food. Beets can help the liver get rid of toxins which aids hormone balance and skin health. The fiber and vitamins in beets can repair skin cells and boost oxygen flow to the skin while powerful anti-oxidants can slow down the impact of aging on skin.

Let beets help you feel juicy and vibrant no matter what your age!
