Dispelling the Myth of Perfect Timing

If you are like me, when something new intrigues me, my first instinct is to tell myself "I'll do that when..." That when might be in the spring or when I'm not so busy or when I'm on vacation or when my youngest goes to college... the list is long my friend. Here's how it might go... you see an ad for a fun art-at-home kit. You can picture yourself spending an afternoon or weeknight learning something new and igniting those creative juices. And then just as easily, you dismiss that activity because it's not the perfect time.

Well, let me tell you there is NO SUCH THING AS THE PERFECT TIME.

We are by nature given to want to control everything - some of us more than others. And that is the mind trying to protect us from doing something "risky" that could jeopardize your longevity. I get it. You could make a really questionable impulsive decision like quitting your job without thinking it through which our primal minds are like, "don't do that you will starve."

But that protective mind is TOO protective. And it falsely tells us that if we do it now we might fail or be imperfect or be judged or made fun of and that "You need to control everything in order to be safe." WRONG. 9 times out of 10 you can take the new class, start the new project, buy the new art kit if you just let go and be open to the possibility that you actually might succeed or that it might not be so bad or that you don't need to be perfect or that you might actually be able to ask for a little support.

Think of all the things in your life you would have missed if you had waited for the perfect time. And this is especially true when it comes to changes in your personal health.

Once we let go of the myth of their being a perfect time, somehow the shoulders descend and the belly inflates and we can put on those sneakers and walk in the morning without the false sense that we need to wait until we have better shoes or that we have to jog right away. We can clean out the pantry of the non-food junk (mostly) and replace them with better options without judging ourselves for how all those products got in there in the first place. How? By letting go of the notion of a perfect you or a perfect time or a perfect whatever.


In my family, we grew up with the phrase, "good enough" and I know it sounds kind of half=ass but it is actually emboldening! Giving enough allows us to replace the notion of perfect and not let opportunities pass us by. And YOU are always enough.
